ABRSM Grading Scheme

Student taking the ABRSM examinations will take the theory and practical tests separately. For more information on the ABRSM examinations, please see the link below.

Students with no background will start off at the beginner (B) grade. For teaching and administrative purposes, theory lessons will be included together will the practical lessons at no additional costs for the B grade. Students will have a basic foundation after completing three beginner courses, B-1, B-2, and B-3.

Students will then move on to gradable levels, from Grade 1 (G1) till Grade 8 (G8). Students will be recommended to take the examinations minimally at G5, for pre-requisite reasons and also for assessment of intermediate skill level. Likewise, G8 is a pre-requisite for further studies.

From G1 – G8, theory and practical lessons will be conducted separately due to the breadth and depth required to cover them (i.e. two time slots). Students who do not wish to commit as much time may choose to combine the lessons into a single slot (with the fees pro-rated accordingly).

Students will also be recommended to take intermediate grades (typically G3 and G6/7) for preparation and intermediate assessment.

Students can choose to further their studies with private diplomas or at conservatories if they wish to do so after obtaining G8 certification.

Top performing students (intermediate and above) may be selected to partake in the accelerated pathway programme (APP). Benefits include fast track learning, invitation to performance opportunities, and sponsorship of up to 60% fees.
