Leonard Law Yong Da
Leonard Law is a Singaporean pianist and educator who has performed at various venues locally, as a soloist and in chamber groups. He focuses on fostering the next generation of musicians, and incorporates his practical experiences in the music industry into his lectures. He teaches a combination of classical and contemporary music.
Teaching Experience & Methodology
Leonard taught for 2.5 years under the established Cristofori Music School as their Education Officer. During his tenure, he taught piano practicum and music theory. Additionally, he has been teaching privately for 5 years. He has taught over 50 students, from Grade 1 through 8, with a 100% pass rate.
His teaching method involves active learning, where he challenges student to think critically about the concepts that they were introduced to, to become an analytical and mindful musician. Students are also introduced to interactive learning methods, gamification, and active recall.
Education Background
He obtained his board qualifications under the ABRSM for piano and theory through private study. He studied his Diploma in Piano Performance (Trinity College of London) under the tutelage of Mr Calvin Kong (MMus).
During his undergraduate years, he studied under Prof Abigail Sin, Prof Chen Zhangyi, Prof Greg Peterson, and Prof Zhou Xiaodong at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Performing and Industry Experience
Leonard served under the Executive Committee at the National University of Singapore, Harmonica Orchestra from year 2022 - 2023. He was also a tutor, harmonicist, piano accompanist, and percussionist during his tenure at NUSHO. He worked in audio at the YSTCoM from year 2021 - 2022. From year 2012 - 2015, he was an active chorale member.
Teaching and Research
His main research interest is in the area of music history and musical hermeneutics.
He teaches the ABRSM syllabus for piano practicum and theory.
